Outside of classes, I lived with a single mother, Judith, an administrator in the Dean’s office, and her fifteen-year-old son, Ema, who during my stay happened to be on break. We lived in employees housing on campus, a simple two-bedroom apartment with electricity and occasionally running water.
Judith was one of the most loving people I have ever met. She wouldn’t come home til 7:00 or 8:00 at night, but always entered the house looking for hugs and making sure I was being well taken care of. Ema, being close to Jack’s age, filled the brother role amazingly well. During dinner and afterwards, he and I would talk pop-culture, movies, and sports. Fortunately I have decent background knowledge in the topics, and my Ipod playlist was quickly approved of. Every night we would watch a movie, normally of the horror genre. Biggest mistake was watching a movie about a tourist group that gets stranded in the middle of a game park two days before we headed on safari. Fortunately I made it through the trip without having to light a lion on fire with gasoline!
